The Château de Puilaurens (Puilaurens Castle, also Puylaurens; in Occitan: lo Castèl de Puèg-Laurenç) is one of the "Cathar" castles in the commune of Lapradelle-Puilaurens in the Aude département. The castle is located above the Boulzane Valley and the villages of Lapradelle and Puilaurens. There is a path from Axat to the castle.
The castle has been listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture since 1902.
The construction of the castle was started in 1229 by Guillaume de Peyrepertuse.It was used as a refuge during the crusade against the Albigeois. Several cathar parfaits were hosted there between 1245 and 1246. The fortress was never seized by Simon de Montfort, leader of the crusade.
Around 1250, the castle became a royal property and it was in the following year that it took its current fortified shape. Louis IX reinforced it to protect Languedoc against Spanish raids.
The Corbeil treaty, signed in 1258, elevates the castle to the rank of defense fortress against Aragon.Along with the castles of Queribus, Peyrepertuse, Termes and Aguilar, it is part of the "Five Sons of Carcassonne" all located at the tops of "unseizable" peaks.
Like its peers, the castle of Puilaurens is progressively abandonned after the Pyrénées Treaty in 1659. A small garrison remains stationned in the citadel during a few years. But the castle is not well defended or maintained as soon as the end of the 17th century and is definitely abandoned during the French Revolution.
The castle has been manually recreated from various photos and videos from the internet. It comes with its own lights and POI.

Je pense que ça peut intéresser de nombreux simmers car j'habite pas loin et souvent des avions font le tour du château et c'est un bon repère VFR dans le coin.
