Talkeetna Airport, Alaska (PATK) - Image 1

    Beschreibung

This scenery is currently broken after Sim Update 13 - See the pinned comment for more info!

Some libraries are required for this scenery to display as intended! Please see Dependencies!

Although somewhat minor, this scenery will not display 100% as intended when using with any package in Julysfire's Talkeetna, Alaska Area Airport/Scenery Pack. See Known Conflicts for more info!

Talkeetna has been rebuilt from the ground up with custom textures for the runway, aprons and gravel areas. Tree placement in the vicinity of the airport has also been completely redone, now exposing the marsh area to the east of the airport, as it should be. The scenery utilizes mostly default models, but does include some custom models, with plans for more in future updates.

    Full features include:

    • Custom Runway, Apron, & Gravel Textures.
    • Overhauled tree placement in the vicinity of the airport.
    • Default and some custom models.
    • Overhauls the Matanuska-Susitna river, uncovering numerous gravel bars.
    • Reworked road placement around Talkeetna.
    • Includes the Talkeetna Village Airstrip (AK44).
    • Includes Christiansen Lake Seaplane Base (AK8).
    • Includes the Talkeetna Railroad Bridge POI.

    Requirements
    Installation

The included "esd-talkeetna-patk" folder should be placed into your MSFS "Packages\Community" folder. The scenery will load the next time you start Microsoft Flight Simulator.

    NOTAMs
    • A river flatten present in Julysfire's packages causes conflicts with the terraforming done at each end of the Talkeetna railway bridge.
    • Some elevation differences have been spotted along the runway at Talkeetna Village Strip.

    Future Development

January 2023 - Moving forward, I will only be providing updates when issues arise with this scenery. This airport layout is very outdated and I no longer plan to improve or add new features to it. I now use the payware Northern Sky Studios Talkeetna and am activly maintaining an improvement mod for it.

Furthermore, I no longer have any plans to create a custom version of Talkeetna at this time. Seeing as the NSS version is quite affordable and up-to-date, it doen't make sense for me to devote a large amount of time to a competing product, payware or freeware.

Thanks to the thousands of you who have downloaded and supported this project, but it is showing it's age and is time to move on to concentrating on better things!

    SU13 Compatibility Notice:
(Still not fixed as of SU14)

    Hello all,
This scenery is currently not functioning correctly after the latest Sim Update. At this time, I highly recommend that you disable the addon until Asobo can provide a fix in a future update.

If you do not disable the addon you will likely experience the following:
    - Loading into PATK or a nearby airport may take up to 5 minutes or longer.
    - Many terrain issues - holes in the ground may appear nearby and the aircraft may drop to the ground when spawning in.

Asobo are aware of this issue and have added it to their backlog. No timeframe for a fix.

For some reason when I load in most of the runway and taxiways at the main airport have a black and white checkerboard pattern on them. Any idea what would cause this? Other than that the scenery looks great.

Those textures are a part of my Emerald Object Library. You need to make sure that dependency is installed or you will have missing textures.

Well worth a watch if you haven't seen it already! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3p2BxTmWHaA

I'm not sure if ORBX's 5-meter mesh will cut it, but hopefully an improvement.

I watched it yesterday then over and over until I could roughly mark out a flight plan to help with the first flight... Then today, I flew it after downloading Talkeetna!

Great work on the scenery Christopher, love the addition of the seaplane base!

I watched that vid yesterday. Angle of Attack and Aviation101's content has been a big help in this and other projects.

I too am anxious to see how the ORBX Alaska mesh plays out. Release is on the 24th, so I'll probably wait for the first reviews and pick it up then so I can ensure compatibility.

I'm working on a complete modern redux of Talkeetna with 3-meter mesh in my current coverage area. Although the 3-meter data is a different source than the 5-meter, it made a huge difference. So, I would expect a decent improvement with the 5m data..

Haha, of course you did! Both are such great aviation content creators, perfect inspiration for Flight Sim.

There is a good review up for the NZ Mesh, it's clear that a professional 3rd party mesh does make a positive difference... How an individual feels about that difference and whether or not they can justify it is a whole different story (based on how they fly through or over the landscape).

Time will tell what it does for Alaska.

Oh wow, that sounds amazing. I'm sure it did, yeah I have no doubt it will be a step up on the current data.

Nice work! I'm wondering if something got broken in 1.15.10 though. For some reason the "Talkeetna" lettering that should be painted on the ramp doesn't show up. I can see the faint outline, but the yellow paint is no longer there. This used to work; I *think* this stopped working after the last update. I've tried running only this add-on in the community folder with the same result.

Nice catch! A complete oversight on my part. I removed the PATK materials folder when I transitioned over to the EOL materials. Forgot I intentionally left the apron text material out of that package. I will push a patch soon to address it.

    thank you for this package.
silly request but I'm just curious, do you have plans to add Talkeetna Air Service's hangar (the one of Don Sheldon) in the Talkeetna Village Airstrip?
I think Sheldon deserves it :)
    again, great work.

I've been back and forth on adding custom buildings. The Bing imagery for Talkeetna, what I based this rendition off of, is fairly out of date. Talkeetna now has a few more hangers, retopped aprons, taxiways, & runway. A few new aprons have also been built on the north end. I almost want to hold off until new data is available, then do a more detailed scenery for all of Talkeetna, including updated aerials. Buildings would be no problem, but SDK optimization and aerials are the limiting factor right now. With how I would want to do it, the aerials would make the file size massive. it would definitely have to be a payware, as I just cant eat that hosting cost on my website for freeware. So, to stop flapping and sum it up, maybe, but undecided.

don't get me wrong, the airport is very nice and I don't feel a single apron should be changed. I am not a fanatic of having everything matching reality to the last rivet.
I was simply referring to this hangar which in the village strip ;)

I got that, but to clarify what I was saying, I would like to do a detailed package for all of Talkeetna eventually, which would be a payware. So, I don't want to include a bunch of custom assets in this package. I will think on it, but I have a few other projects I'm working on that I need to get done before I make any decisions on that. Would need to track down some more photos as well, as I have only found 2 angles so far.
