Carmel Valley Airfield, designated ICAO code O62, was a privately owned airpark in Carmel Valley, California, operating from 1941 until its closure in 2002. It was originally developed by Byington Ford and his brother Tirey L. Ford Jr. in 1940, with the vision of creating a residential airpark where pilot-owners could live near their aircraft, enabling them to be "at home a minute or two after getting out of their planes". The grand opening was scheduled for December 7, 1941, but was immediately overshadowed by the attack on Pearl Harbor, which led to a ban on civilian flights along the West Coast and halted the project temporarily as Byington Ford joined the Army Air Corps. After World War II, the project resumed, and the airfield became known as the Carmel Valley Vintage Airfield.
The airfield was notable for being the first planned residential airpark in the United States and the world, a distinction recognized by the California Historical Resources Commission, which voted to nominate it as a State Historic Resource in 2000. The site featured a 2,400-foot landing strip planted with African Kikuyu grass, and two hangar-homes were constructed, one of which still stands today. The airfield also served as a training site for military pilots during World War II and functioned as an alternative landing field for military aircraft from Watsonville and King City. In the post-war era, it hosted aviation events and served as a cultural and emergency resource, including being used by helicopters during the 2016 Soberanes Fire.
Despite its historical significance and local support, the airfield faced closure due to noise and environmental concerns, leading to its final closure in May 2002 after 53 years of operation. The property was later sold to Griggs Nursery in December 2020, with plans to use the land for plant cultivation rather than housing development.
*Attention Glider Pilots. My airports will break your ability to launch. I built my airports specifically to remove the ground crews. Unbeknownst to me as I dont do gliders unless my motor breaks it had other ramifications, lol. It is unlikely going to get fixed in these GA airports. Ive moved up to biz jets so any work will go in that direction. I do this free for myself so please dont be upset. I never intended to make the gliders mad at me., lol.
My version of the o62 Carmel Valley Airpark is a Fictional version based loosely on what I imagine the improvments might have been has the nimbys not won. It has a sand runway but I went back and forth what I sdhould make this one out of. I chose sand but still might change my mind, or not, lol. This is a complete rework from my previous version.
Runway 11-29: Hard sand: 1800 feet (548m) x 46 feet (13.9m).
SIngle Helipad 100' South of RW Southern Departure.
CTAF/Unicom 122.900. No ILS/VOR/DME/RNAV appraches.
Pattern: 11 right 29 left: Pattern Alt AGL 1000ft (305m). Airpark altitude +400ft MSL (122m).
Runway lights: Medium edge lighing. PAPI2 11-29.

I made an assumption about a Navigation setting that was incorrect. This Airport includes this and has been remedied.
