First of all thank you to all users, who made this the second most downloaded scenery mod on flightsim.to in 2025.

What this mod does and does not do

It aims at optimising the performance at Frankfurt Airport EDDF by removing photogrammetry trees in a large area around it and reducing the density of autogen trees to 50% or even less. On most systems, this will lead to only a small increase in fps in straight and level flight but it very much lightens the load on the pre-terrain-cache when turning around. Thousands of trees no longer have to be loaded into and deleted from the cache in very little time, so you will get less stutter and a smoother experience.

Default forests in photogrammetry areas are composed of TIN trees that are covered up by an incredibly dense mass of autogen trees. This results in two or three times the system load compared to a less dense regular forest. Performance is dragged down unnecessarily. Removing most of this does not only help the CPU, it also looks a lot better.

The area of tree removal is pretty big so also smaller airfields like Egelsbach, Darmstadt and Zellhausen benefit.You can see the exact area I modified in my top-down screenshot.

I did more extensive work around Frankfurt airport and even added a few autogen trees, where they were missing. Unfortunately the trees in the airport cargo area are back and my fix can no longer remove them. So that depends on an update by the original creators of the airport sceneries.

Lumberjack Mod

It reduces autogen trees on a global level. If you use it side by side with the Frankfurt Performance Mod, I recommend using the 'photogrammetry removal only' version of the Frankfurt mod.

Compatibility

Since this mod does not do anything to the airport itself, it is compatible with all airport addons namely the default version, Asobo Premium, Aviotek, VirtualFRA, Feelthere and Aerosoft.

It's compatible with MSFS 2020 and 2024.

Installation

Starting with version 8.0, I give you five different options. ALL options include the photogrammetry removal. On top of that, you can chose, how much autogen trees you want displayed. 30% might be the sweet spot between performance and still good looks but feel free to try for yourself. I formerly used 50% autogen for the main version.
