    Asobo Robin CAP10C Realism Mod

This is a modification to the MSFS 2020 default  Asobo Robin CAP10C aircraft.  This mod is primarily aimed at improving the flight model performance to provide a more realistic flying experience that is closer to the actual aircraft.  Multiple changes have been made to the engine and flight model parameters, as well as the aircraft weight and balance, which are all detailed in the Change Log file included under the Documentation folder, along with a full PDF copy of the actual Aircraft Flight Manual.

This mod is easily installed by simply unzipping the download file and copying the mge-asobo-aircraft-cap10c folder to the MSFS Community folder.  It will then replace the existing default aircraft in the MSFS aircraft selection screen, and will continue to use all available aircraft Liveries.  To uninstall the mod and return to using the original MSFS default aircraft, simply remove it from the Community folder.

TIP OF THE DAY: To perform an Immelmann Turn without changing your view to look at the left wing, use this simple procedure...

    1) Press [F11] to toggle the LANDING forward view.
    2) Perform a high-speed level pass straight down the runway at about 250 km/hr.
    3) At the end of the runway, apply full THROTTLE and almost full UP ELEVATOR to perform a half loop. Monitor the Stall Warning light during the loop.
    4) Monitor the Attitude Indicator during the loop and apply AILERONS as needed to maintain wings level until the indicator flips from upright to inverted.
    5) Continue to hold UP ELEVATOR until the ground reappears at the top of the wind screen, then immediately release the ELEVATOR back to NEUTRAL.
    6) Apply full LEFT AILERON and full LEFT RUDDER to perform a half roll back to upright flight over the runway.
    7) Return the AILERONS and RUDDER back to NEUTRAL.
    8) Press [F11] again to return to the default PILOT forward view.

TIP OF THE DAY: This aircraft does not have differential ailerons and when you deflect the ailerons to turn or roll it will automatically yaw in the opposite direction (adverse yaw), which then requires applying rudder along with the ailerons to counter this yaw during a coordinated turn or Aileron Roll maneuver. Look at the Slip Ball during the turn or roll and apply sufficient Rudder to keep it centered during the maneuver.

But, you can also take advantage of this adverse yaw when performing a maneuver like a Slow Roll. A Left Slow Roll can be easily performed by simply applying LEFT AILERONS, which will then also produce a right yaw reducing the amount of Right Rudder required during the first half of the roll. Then, just apply DOWN ELEVATOR while you are inverted, and apply LEFT RUDDER during the last half of the roll back to the upright position. A Right Slow Roll can be performed by applying RIGHT AILERONS, DOWN ELEVATOR and RIGHT RUDDER.

TIP OF THE DAY: If you want an ideal airport for practicing aerobatics in this aircraft, I highly recommend KOSH (Oshkosh, Wisconsin), which is the home of the world's largest annual airshow (AirVenture). It has two long wide runways that run directly EAST/WEST (09/27) and NORTH/SOUTH (18/36), in addition to two shorter diagonal runways. It even has a small grass strip adjacent to the airport for STOL aircraft. It is located next to a large lake (Lake Winnebago), which makes it very easy to visually keep track of your position and orientation during maneuvers. There is also a very long straight freeway on the West side of the airport that runs directly NORTH/SOUTH and is ideal as a visual reference while flying an approach pattern or performing maneuvers. Another unique feature of this airport are the large painted colored dots at 1,500 ft. intervals on the main runways, which are used by ATC and Pilots as visual reference points for maintaining traffic separation while landing multiple aircraft simultaneously during the extremely busy airshow.

I also recommend downloading this excellent update for KOSH...

TIP OF THE DAY: To perform a spin, use this simple procedure...
    1) Reduce the POWER to idle.
    2) Set the AILERONS to neutral and slowly apply up ELEVATOR to maintain altitude as the speed decreases.
    3) When the red Stall Warning light comes on, apply and hold full RUDDER in the desired direction of the spin.
    4) Apply and hold full up ELEVATOR to stall and fully develop the SPIN.

Use the "P.A.R.E" procedure described below to recover from the spin...

TIP OF THE DAY: The red Stall Warning light is not visible in direct sunlight... So, before performing aerobatic maneuvers turn to a heading, or open the WEATHER page and change the time of day, so that the stall warning light is not in direct sunlight. You must be able to see this light during maneuvers to avoid stalling.

It is only for MSFS 2020... You can verify it is installed by the different registration number on the side of the aircraft.

TIP OF THE DAY: The SHOWCASE/DRONE camera view is a good way to externally observe complex aerobatic maneuvers like spins, and you can quickly toggle between the COCKPIT view and DRONE view during flight by simply pressing [INSERT]. But, if you want to maintain control of the aircraft while in the DRONE view, you must also press [C] to toggle between the default DRONE control mode and the AIRCRAFT control mode. You can also enable AIRCRAFT control by default when you press [INSERT] by configuring this additional KEYBOARD binding under DRONE CAMERA...

    TOGGLE PLANE CONTROLS............[C]...............[INSERT]

TIP OF THE DAY: To recover from a spin, always use the "P.A.R.E" procedure...
    1) Reduce the "P"ower to idle.
    2) Set the "A"ilerons to neutral.
    3) Apply full opposite "R"udder.
    4) Set the "E"levator to neutral.

TIP OF THE DAY: Many aerobatic maneuvers like spins and snap rolls require intentionally stalling, and this aircraft is designed to easily stall when you apply full UP elevator, or if you pull back on the stick too quickly. So, it is important to monitor the stall warning light during all maneuvers and ease off on the stick back pressure if it comes on.

The Flaps UP Stall Speed shown in the AFM performance tables is 99 km/h... But, this only applies for straight and level flight. A stall is not actually caused by airspeed, it occurs when the wing critical AOA is exceeded, which can happen at any speed and at any pitch attitude, including straight down toward the ground at 300 km/h! So, it is important to pay attention to the stall warning light and immediately reduce the elevator deflection when it comes ON. The higher the speed the greater the momentum, which makes it harder for the aircraft to change its direction. So, if you apply too much elevator deflection too quickly at high speeds you can easily cause it to stall. Also, a stall will not occur with the elevator at neutral, regardless of the speed or attitude.

I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to Mike for creating, with his dedicated and passionate work, this MOD of the CAP 10C, an aircraft I have been flying in real life for several years (even if not very often). His work allowed me to explore aspects of simulation I didn’t know, especially those related to the flight dynamics of the aircraft I actually fly. Thanks to Mike, I can now pilot it in the virtual world as well, performing about 90% of the basic aerobatic program I learned during my aerobatic qualification. This has genuinely impressed my real-life instructor, who did not expect I could execute it so well, as I showed him in a video. That's great, many thanks Mike!

TIP OF THE DAY: After performing aerobatic maneuvers in this aircraft, the Directional Gyro may lose calibration and show the wrong heading. If this occurs, just press [D] to recalibrate it.

TIP OF THE DAY: To start the engine from cold and dark, follow the normal STARTING ENGINE checklist steps. Open the throttle to about 1/4 instead of "1 cm" during the startup procedure. If the engine begins to start and then stalls immediately after you set the Mixture to full RICH, don't repeat the whole procedure, simply leave the Throttle at 1/4 and the Mixture at RICH and press the starter button again. It should then start and continue running.

The BEFORE STARTING ENGINE checklist also says to turn the Avionics switch ON, but this is not required and it will significantly increase the battery drain without the engine running. So, don't turn it ON until after the engine has been started, and the Alternator switch has been turned ON.

TIP OF THE DAY: The "Aerobatics Trim/Flaps" panel switch in this aircraft is reversed. The default OFF (Down) position of the switch enables the electric trim and flaps for normal flight, and the ON (Up) position disables them for aerobatic flight as required in the AFM Normal Procedures. The BEFORE STARTUP checklist in the AFM says to turn this switch ON, but you must turn it OFF instead. If the aircraft electric trim or flaps are not working as expected, check the position of this switch. Unfortunately, this bug can only be fixed by Asobo.

TIP OF THE DAY: This aircraft does not have differential ailerons, and both ailerons always deflect UP and DOWN by the same amount. This provides maximum roll rate, but also results in unequal aileron drag and adverse yaw toward the outside of a turn. This means that to perform a fully coordinated turn you must also apply Rudder in the same direction as the ailerons to counteract this yaw and prevent a side slip.

TIP OF THE DAY: When flying inverted, you must "push" the nose Up by applying DOWN Elevator, and "pull" it Down with UP Elevator. You also must apply LEFT aileron to turn to the Right, and apply RIGHT aileron to turn to the Left, which is exactly opposite to upright flight and is very disorienting at first! So, it requires a lot of concentration and practice to ignore your previously learned flight control habits and get used to this completely reversed flight control response.

TIP OF THE DAY: To perform a half roll into inverted flight, apply LEFT or RIGHT Aileron and apply Rudder in the OPPOSITE direction to prevent the nose from dropping during the roll. When you are fully inverted, neutralize the Ailerons and Rudder and apply DOWN Elevator as required to maintain altitude. To perform another half roll back to upright flight, apply LEFT or RIGHT Aileron and apply Rudder in the SAME direction to prevent the nose from dropping during the roll.

To perform a full Slow Roll, combine the above half rolls by applying and holding LEFT or RIGHT aileron, then apply Rudder in the OPPOSITE direction during the first half to keep the nose above the horizon, changing it back to neutral as you reach inverted, and then apply it in the SAME direction during the last half of the roll . Also apply DOWN elevator during the inverted part of the roll to maintain altitude.

TIP OF THE DAY: A simple but impressive maneuver frequently used at airshows for quickly reversing direction is the Immelmann turn. This is a simple half loop, followed by a half roll at the top to go from inverted back to upright flight in the opposite direction.

To perform this maneuver, start with a high-speed pass directly over the runway. Then, at the end of the runway apply FULL power and pull back on the stick to apply and hold almost full UP Elevator (reduce it if the stall warning light comes on). Look at the LEFT wing tip Triangle to monitor your progress through loop and when you reach the top (inverted), release the stick back pressure and return the elevator to neutral, or slightly DOWN. Look forward again and apply LEFT Aileron to roll back upright. Apply LEFT Rudder during the roll to prevent the nose from dropping.

TIP OF THE DAY: Avoid rolling to the right during aerobatic maneuvers, especially at slow airspeeds with full power. The engine torque from the clockwise rotating prop will oppose a Right Roll and assist a Left Roll, so always roll to the left during aerobatic maneuvers if possible.
