    BGTL - Thule AFB - Greenland - Image 1

    Beschreibung

Thule US Air Force base in Greenland.

Another one weirdly not included in the sim.

A fine place to stop over on your way elsewhere and also an excellent choice when the world is ending, though I doubt you'll get a warm welcome unless you prove how awesome your DNA and fertility is.

This is a bit basic and blank as is but the elements are there. Most of the buildings were already in place but I've replaced a few and added some other ones.

A fuel bay, a fuel truck and a few parking spots with all the ground services are present.

Terrain twitching and pop ins, and general crapness, are a sizeable problem but this is the same in the entire region and at least this area of Greeland is recognisable as an actual location.

V 1.3 is mainly about making this Navigraph friendly. Hopefully with their tips this should now be the case. Also added are a few US military items from the sim.

The folder name has changed so if you have the old version you'll need to hunt it down and liquidate it.

Tested on MSFS 2024 and it's working properly.

The scenery is generally good. Can we consider updating this before World Flight 2025 and aligning it with Google Maps? :)

I've never heard of that before. Sounds interesting. I haven't been here for a long, long time and gave up on it because the ground imagery was so hopeless. Maybe it's stopped flickering and now it's just sludge. Aligning with Google Maps sounds like clever talk, but I'll give it a look. Not holding out much hope.

I have been to Thule AFB three times (it has some other silly name now - it's always Thule to me) hopping rides on C-141s, but can't comment on the accuracy of your modeling, since my stays were always in December or January, so I never actually saw the place during 24-hr darkness and extremely cold conditions. But from photos I have and have seen of Thule, this looks pretty good (needs the big golfballs (most go on your concrete pads to the east of the runway) and BMEWS antenna up on the hill, though) and many thanks for bringing it to MSFS and bringing back memories from decades ago!

If you ever come back to update this, Google Earth's imagery isn't bad for guidance, and the history timeline shows golfballs that used to be there but have been removed.

Hiya, Ive been considering modelling Thule AFB and its main buildings as I do love remote arctic places. I saw google maps has pretty good Aerial Imagery, have you considered importing that? If it even is possible/allowed. Then again, the current crap imagery is mostly hidden under snow Id assume.

I do have an aerial image for it. It's going to look awfully jarring from a distance though so haven't got rolling with it. At least the site doesn't flicker between totally different ground images as it once did. I'll wait for 2024 to see if new imagery arrives here in 2020 and then have a think. This is now a bit of an embarrassment these days.

Alright. I checked bing maps current imagery, and theres no difference. May I ask where you got the aerial image from?

Google. And that has its own problems as it's not necessarily the right time of year. You need a summery one really for the sim to stick its weather on top. And then you have the problem of shadows.

Fair enough. USGS and Copernicus' Sentinels provide summer data, but not in high-res. Google seems to be the only one with anything hi-res of that area.

I wonder if you could just "fake it" with msfs ground materials applied within polygons. Might be better than nothing

Ground materials aren't suited for covering large distances. The tiling is far too overt and it looks hideous. Better to have a borderline non existent ground image than that. Since the current Bing image is still awful I don't expect it to improve in 2020 when 2024 launches but sometimes MSFS gets better aerials before Bing Maps.

Good start. Will there be any static USAF aircraft added to touch it up?

I've been experimenting with a ground image for here, but it's going to stick out so ridiculously I'm not sure it's worth doing.

This area looks so awful I may leave it as a piece of old crud. At least it doesn't violently switch between ground image quality like it used to.

Such a pity. Asobo/MS haven't touched it yet.....

Hope it's better in msfs 2024.

    cheers!
