The lighthouse, Þrídrangaviti, is located in Iceland's Westman Islands about 10 km from the shore. It is probably the most isolated lighthouse in the world and is precariously perched at 36 metres (118 ft) atop a rock pillar with the wild waves of the cold North Atlantic Ocean raging below. Today, the lighthouse is accessible by helicopter and even has a small helipad for "easy" landing, but in 1938, when construction began. The brave workers had to climb the 36-metres high rock to reach the top, where they laid the lighthouse's foundations by hand, while making sure that strong winds and rain did not plunge them into the icy North Atlantic Ocean.
For the record, as this lighthouse is uninhabited, there is no help from the windy weather conditions.
