The city of Faro, political and administrative capital, holds most of the administrative services in the region and, therefore, is very attractive for the implementation of tertiary and commercial activities, subsidized by the housing function. Faro assumed its cosmopolitan vocation when its international airport opened on 11 July 1965, with António de Oliveira Salazar being President of the Council of Ministers. Today, thanks to the increase in tourist demand across the Algarve, the city has the second busiest airport in Portugal behind Lisbon's Portela airport, with a movement of over 9 million passengers a year. The airport is also used by tourists heading to certain places in Andalusia as it is closer than Seville airport.
