Sisimiut Airport is a small regional airport located about 4 km northwest of Sisimiut, one of Greenland’s largest towns. Opened in 1998, it forms part of Greenland’s network of short takeoff and landing (STOL) airports designed to connect remote communities where road infrastructure is limited.
A defining feature of the airport is its single asphalt runway (13/31), which is approximately 800 meters long. This relatively short runway restricts operations to smaller aircraft such as turboprops (e.g., Dash-7 and Dash-8), which are capable of operating in Greenland’s challenging weather and terrain.
Because of its limited runway length and remote location, the airport primarily handles domestic flights operated by Air Greenland, linking Sisimiut with hubs like Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq. It does not host based aircraft and functions mainly as a transit stop within the regional network.
Overall, Sisimiut Airport is a vital piece of infrastructure for western Greenland, where air travel is essential for transportation. Its 800-meter runway highlights the reliance on specialized short-field aircraft and reflects the logistical challenges of aviation in Arctic environments.
