The big news today is that MSFS2024 will be released in 2024 … just! Anyway, I wonder if it will include this little gem of an airstrip? Probably not. 2020 certainly doesn’t include it, and I suppose it barely exists in the real world. It does though, I flew past it a couple of years ago, and belatedly now thought let’s add it!
On the western coast of southern Myanmar (Burma) lies a group of islands called the Mergui Archipelago. They are sparsely populated by the Moken people, often referred to as the sea gypsies. The islands are covered in lush tropical rainforests and are surrounded by crystal clear waters with rich coral reefs. Due to “political difficulties” the islands are virtually off the radar as far as international tourism is concerned, though recently diving tours have started to appear out of Phuket in Thailand.
There is but a single airport on these islands, and what you see before you is it. Located on Sir J. Malcolm Island, it was until recently just a short dirt strip across a low-lying saddle. But it has recently undergone a bit of an upgrade and now sports a concrete runway with helipads. It’s still short though (about 600m/2000’). Beware the steep embankments at both thresholds … don’t go short! Apron space is limited. As far as I’m aware it doesn’t have an ICAO identifier, but you can find it in the sim using the fictional VYZ1.
To add some flexibility, I’ve added water runways in the bay and a seaplane dock at the nearby fishing village.
Design Notes
I’ve used several objects from the Oceania WU and Asobo’s Saba and Lukla airports. You need to have them installed to see the scenery as I’ve designed it.
Also, the runway designators are 11/29. You may observe the fact that a "14" is painted on the 11 end. For some obscure reason that's also true in real life.
