Of all of the felines, the Margay is the master of the treetops. Adaptations - like hind feet that can rotate 180 degrees, extra-long tails for balance and mobile toes that make it possible to slowly descend head first down a tree trunk - make it possible for this small wildcat to spend most of its days frolicking the tree canopies. Their primary habitat is deciduous and evergreen forest that stretches from Mexico to South America. At one time found in Texas, they are now extinct in the United States. Due to deforestation, exploitation of its pelt for fur trade - combined with the fact that mother cats can only reproduce once every two years - the outlook of their survival is not good.
