EGTE Exeter is my nearest proper airport so I couldn't look myself in the mirror until it was saved from ignominy.
The in sim airport has bizarre taxiways that have oozed all over clearly disused land and it has the usual blankness that we all know and love.
This version has had the taxi system ripped out and rebuilt, erasing the rogue aprons, taxi routes and parking spaces and adding a more sensible set up with some north apron and grass parking along with the main apron.
The ground markings have been removed and redone and some custom textures added. The non bonkers aprons have been erased and closer matches have been glued on.
A ton of extra detail has been added including letting my increasingly deranged obsession with car parks run riot. The buildings and hangars on the opposite side of the airfield have been filled in. The industrial estate around the airport has been lit properly as it was pitch black at night, and of course the airport has too as that was near dark as well.
There are 3 parking spaces for helicopters on the North side of the airport where the air ambulance files from and some hangars for planes to start in on that side too.
V 2.3
Replace a couple of buildings gone wrong.
Makes the skylights in the open hangars transparent.
Adds a teensy amount of extra road surface and vegetation.
Adds four helipads where the helipads are so you and your friends can all take off in unison. I myself have no friends as I possess vile personal habits.

No ping pong table ;( that's the highlght at our arport lol!
Jokes amazng jobs even the history signs well done sir 😊

I don't know if this is a new problem, but a few of the buildings are now rendering on "top" of fog inside a couple of aircraft ( the freeware EC135 for example ) Ie they show up as if there's no fog, just floating in a sea of grey. That I guess is *partly* the aircraft fault, but given it's only a few buildsings & not all then it must be select shader options somewhere.
The PAPI are still at the wrong ends too! 😀 otherwise all seems ok.

I think that's likely to be something to do with weather exclusion boxes vs windscreen materials. I'll forget about the weather indoors from now on.
VanDisaster 1 month(s) ago
Presuming they're all the hangars, would making the exclusion box smaller than the building work? or splitting the interiors into a seperate building & attaching the box to that ( you can tell Im not familiar with how it works... )
Fog in hangars isn't the end of the world anyway.
superspud 1 month(s) ago
No. Doesn't matter about size. Existence is sufficient.
Quassel89
Great airport.
Works perfectly, looks great
and is a great upgrade for the MSFS.
I particularly like the many small details.
It is compatible with SU11,
thanks for that
daztheman70
Absolutely awesome airport thank you so much for all your time and effort in making this, just one thing I noticed is the Papi lights don't follow the ILS showing all white when established not sure if you know about this or can fix it but if you can be the icing on the cake thank you!!
EnjonUK
Stunning airport, thanks for this.

Love the update, especially around the DAA base. I can really appreciate the effort that's gone in here now I've had a little go at airports myself. A lot for me to learn from your work!

Very interesting airport. I love the racing forklift. 😊

Amazing work, of course. I'm a nostalgic, so would it be possible to have a version which leaves the Flybe Q400s over at the far side of the airport? We still have them visiting in both new and old colours relatively frequently for maintenance.
superspud 5 month(s) ago
Ah. I thought they were long gone.
I've added them as an additional file to download. Click on the download button and it'll show up.

Many thanks, that's wonderful.

Loved the original version, but this is a great improvement. I use it with John Lovells Exeter, Torbay and Plymouth photosceneries. Thanks so much for giving us this one. I'm really enjoying it. 5 stars.
foxtrotostrich
lovely work mate as always... apart from the viewing area ontop of the terminal i was there the other week and it was nowhere neart as clean! bird sh*t and butt ends everywhere! 😋 one thing though the building near the baron in a flight school area is all white top to bottom windows included is that intentional?
superspud 7 month(s) ago
I'm not sure the world is ready for 3d modelled dog ends, but I'll give it some thought.
The other building will be a stock one that I thought 'bleurgh, that'll do'. If you've got some pics of that area then pop them over.
foxtrotostrich 7 month(s) ago
no its fine how it is was just joshin ya! Ill send a photo of that all white building. Love the job mate the buildings outside the airport boundary is a lovely touch.

This is 10 years ago, but is it that blue shed ( I'm not giving it the dignity of calling it a hangar ) in the middle distance? https://live.staticflickr.com/7228/7358061122_b1cf5d8b0f_o_d.jpg - something to do with Aviation SouthWest? I think they have a couple of King Airs & a Duchess which paints some comical tracks over my way every now and then. If I make it over to take a trip in the Robins I'll... probably forget to take a photo...
Video from last year looks like it hasn't changed at all ( maybe just faded a bit ), some more shots of the terminal area too - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4lME_AMhag
I don't remember those triangle-wedge shaped buildings on the right, not that I've ever wandered around that bit.
VanDisaster
Wow mate, *very* nice, thanks! Sad to see all the q400s leave but not really 😊
Terminal seems to have had some sort of screen wall in front of the walkway added recently - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ut-ZYIeRg4g ( and the top is apparently the same grey as the bottom, but I rather like the blue personally! ) don't think there's any rush on any of those.
VanDisaster 6 month(s) ago
Incidentally I had a thought - there's readily available 1m LIDAR data for most of the UK ( DEFRA have a website for it for one ), would converting it to some height data MSFS understands & then importing it without doing anything else to the terrain work?
superspud 6 month(s) ago
The data is out there, the method of implementing it I have used occasionally is now toast.
And the results were usually so crap that I wonder whether the satellite was turned off for that pass.
I dunno what the good payware people use to terraform, but I can't get within a million miles of it. The results are just too crude.
The terrain should retain its shape when you open it in development mode, but it usually doesn't and breaks horribly which is what happened here to necessitate flattening it originally.
These days instead of spending 10-20 hours re terraforming an area to end up with it looking worse than what I started with I simply abandon the project instead.
But this does look abnormally flat and it's quite distracting.
VanDisaster 6 month(s) ago
Oh, so it's the mere act of performing any operation other than flattening that's the problem, not a particular operation? well, ew, and really what on earth.
Thanks for the reminder of how frustrating modding can be, I was nearly tipping myself into it again 😀
VanDisaster 6 month(s) ago
I'll just drop this in here as you'll get tagged wherever I put it...
AI is still spawning flights in the hangars, are they still set up as normal parking spots?
And, not sure if this is you or the defualt scenery, but there's some interesting wing-shaped chalk areas 😀 https://imgur.com/a/O3OIGSt
superspud 6 month(s) ago
They are indeed. You don't get to start your flight inside the hangar unless they are. As far as I know there's no way of excluding AI stuff. Those wings must've been covered up by the now defunct/ flying Flybe models.
VanDisaster 6 month(s) ago
Maybe set the hangars as MIL spots of some sort? or does that not exclude AI airliners still?
superspud 6 month(s) ago
The type of space doesn't matter. AI will pop up in anything. The size of the space dictates what does show. An airliner won't appear unless it's big enough.
White_Wolf
Nice work. Thanks Superspud.

HEY! first of all thanks for the amazing airport. just wanted to report that the PAPIS are wrong. RWY 08 should be 3ºPAPi and is set to the value for RWY26 (3.5º) the opposite happens for RWy 26, it should be 3.5º but its set to 3º. just need to turn it around to have it correct PAPIS. otherwise this is my favourite airport so thanks again for the amazing work. ONLY the PAPIS are wrong, the ILS angle is correct.
VanDisaster 4 month(s) ago
Just flew into 08 for the first time in ages, can confirm PAPIs don't match the glideslope at this end too, still. Swap the PAPI ends and all will be well, I think.
VanDisaster
Tried the Aerosoft one - they have some undulations ( not sure if they're *correct* undulations, runway looks a bit better & ramp colours & markings look a bit more up to date, but overall still prefer yours. Well done! 😊
superspud 8 month(s) ago
Aw. Too kind. Shall return to this with the final couple of buildings when I stop travelling. I also need to do some interior and trim some fencing and add ground grime.
I may pick up theirs just to be nosy.
Dunno about undulations. I had to be brutal flattening this site as it went mad. I expect theirs will be correct.
VanDisaster 8 month(s) ago
I haven't been airside at Exeter in so long I can't remember what it's like, unfortunately. Having reviewed some vid they might well be right, although some bits fieel a bit extreme. The real terminal is a dark bluey-grey rather than your blue & theirs is probably closer ( pity, I like the blue!), but honestly it looks like a smudge & the textures are blurry. The radio freqs are off & drive me nuts too, haha.

Stairport Sceneries are my most hated developer! It's a little unfair as I'm sure there are worse out there but I bought St Marys, only to find it was a big downgrade over Superspud's overhaul of the entire island complex, and then ended up going for their Lands End, which was inferior in my opinion to Gaya/Asobo's free job from WU3. They didn't even bother to texture the road right outside the airport.
I watched a video review of Stairports Exeter and saw the screenshots on FSelite and its not a patch on Superspud's. He just developes so much more, lavishing attention and detail on little things like all the carparks.
I wish Stairport would F off to another part of the world than Devon and Cornwall, where I live. They aren't bothering to put in the effort to surpass what Asobo and freeware developers have already done, and them producing payware probably means the good developers for English airports like Pilot Plus and Burning Blue Design probably won't make them, so their half hearted efforts are most likely preventing top quality efforts being made. :-/
KevinBrook 8 month(s) ago
On the plus side, there is a guy making Devon sceneries and selling them privately called RealVFR. You can see his channel on Youtube. He's done a superb rendition of Plymouth Sound and City, and is working on Salcombe right now.
His version of Salcombe is what I'd expect from a payware developer. He's custom made all the buildings, including Overbeck's house and gardens, the caravan park nearby and the farm near the runway. He's also added watermasks and boats, it's looking amazing so I will definitely be grabbing that when it's done.
I've been enjoying Superspud's version for the past year but happy to pay for a one that expands upon it. Stairport's problem is they don't bother to expand on what's available, rather they do less.
VanDisaster 8 month(s) ago
Having messed a bit more the "undulations" are actually luimps in some places & the terminal has all sorts of things wrong with it despite being "the latest build" - what he got right over Spud's is the grey-blue & the dome on the tower roof, and that's mostly it, the rest is worse. I like the hangars & some slightly more weathered texturing in places, but there's enough wrong with it that 'll be sticking with Spud's. Maybe one day he'll win the fight with the terrain 😊
Thanks for the tip about the other dev, I'll go have a look. Chatting to the guy who's done Farway & Eggesford, he's super enthusiastic about the small fields, so at some point I could see us having a complete set. And boy there's a lot of airfields in Devon... I've lived vaguely around Exeter for a large amount of my life, so all the attention is awesome 😊
KevinBrook 8 month(s) ago
Yes, I'd love to have some high quality Devon airports and airfields, currently Superspud's Exeter is by far the best thing Devon has in the sim. I'd really like a high quality payware of Lundy Island, with all the buildings and cliffs accurately modelled, with some wildlife all around, and better ortho for the island itself.
North Devon generally is completely neglected so far. Burning Blue Design did a stellar job with Bodmin, that level of attention to minor airfields is perfect imo.
VanDisaster 8 month(s) ago
JP's Lundy was(is!) nice, it's a pity it's not on the site anymore. That Plymouth is pretty nice too, although the ILS is quite broken & the terminal feels a little underscale, really nice atmosphere though & a good effort at the city itself.
jeromelogue
Must say thank you for all these awesome airports and all your excellent scenery works, sir! Really brilliant stuff! Visited Exeter earlier on today, in a Cargolux 747 - very nice airport! Thank you!
savvysigma
Beautiful detail in this airport.
Could I ask you however if you can look at the PAPIs for runway 08? They seem to guide the aircraft half way down the runway on a 3 degree glide, but the ones on Rwy 24 are fine!
I took a couple pics if you need.
Cheers,
superspud 10 month(s) ago
I will give it a check. I need to give this a spruce up soon and finish off a couple of buildings.
VanDisaster 6 month(s) ago
Did you ever check this one? I used the ILS for 26 for the first time in a while & it didn't seem to line up with the PAPI.
VanDisaster
If you're ever in the mood for it, an ex flybe FO was quite sad not to recognise Jack Walker House 😀 ( not up on most lists of priorities I'd imagine... ). A row of terrace houses has appeared in the car park next door though.
The ( real ) apron, especially outside the hangars, seems seriously grubby atm from a really brief glimpse I had en passant.
VanDisaster 10 month(s) ago
Relatively more seriously ( relatively! ) - is there a way to stop AI spawning in the hangars? I just watched a live TUI flight spawn in the west one & push back through the hangar wall(!)
superspud 10 month(s) ago
Hmm. Not sure. I just stick parking spaces down and forget about it. I presume if it's a space then something will try to occupy it.
Next update I'll make the hangar collidable so you can look forward to it twitching uselessly instead.
VanDisaster 10 month(s) ago
"Help! help! I'm being repressed!"
Been digging into AI traffic a bit to see if I can sanitise things, looks like where A/C can spawn is set per A/C, so if someone's decided their Blackburn Beverley is a small GA aircraft because it's slower than a Tiger Moth, then it'll spawn in a GA spot tagged as small as long as the wingspan fits... so we need people to stop tagging every aircraft as MIL.
