WU13 UPDATE: A fix included with WU13 Oceania appears to have resolved the issue introduced with SU12.
SU12 UPDATE: Please be advised that SU12 has at least partially broken water masks in the sim. As a result you may experience erratic texture behavior when using this mod. I understand that MS/Asobo are aware of the issue. So hopefully a fix is forthcoming.
Ahhh, Australia ... the land of a thousand lakes!!! Oh, wait, that's Finland, or Minnesota, or something ... but Australia?
Well, according to MSFS, Australia's Outback is full of pristine, sparkling blue, freshwater lakes. They're everywhere, just have a look. Jump into your favourite prop at Ayers Rock (YAYE) and head north for 10 Minutes, and you'll get to Lake Amadeus ... a veritable boating paradise! No? Well, no! It's actually a dry salt lake. It hasn't seen standing water in living memory. The early British explorers were smoking something illicit when they called those things "Lakes" (I guess akin to Erik the Red calling that big chunk of ice a little west of Reykjavik ... Greenland!)
Anyway, this has been a bugbear of mine since my first MSFS flight back in August 2020. That was before we even had float planes! Now, I was hoping that WU7 would finally deal with this issue, but alas, it has not. So, I've just spent the better part of a day hovering around the driest continent on earth (never mind Antarctica for now) and sponged up all that excess H2O that doesn't exist in real life.
Notes:
- I've taken a fairly broad brush (or should I say big sponge). There are thousands of those buggers. If I've missed some, let me know. If I've emptied your favourite billabong, let me know.
- The removal of the water has left some of the larger lakes with irregular textures (e.g. bad colour correction). I guess Azure gets lazy under water. It's sometimes noticeable from high altitudes, but this bothers me less than a huge lake where there isn't one, but ymmv.
- Some of the exclusions are very large in area. Lake Eyre alone is 9,500 km2 (3,700 sqm). I don't know if this has a performance impact. I haven't really noticed anything, but if someone feels several hundred exclusion polygons have an impact on lower end systems, then please feel free to let me know.
- I'm guessing that I've place 1000+ polygons. Obviously I can't check every single one in the sim, so if you see anything funky, let me know.
Anyway, enjoy some real Aussie Outback flying, and leave your lifejackets at home!

Many thanks for updating the status so quickly after WU13 dropped.
I'm currently retracing my PPL central australian navex and about to venture to William Creek, Lake Eyre. When I was there it was like the surface of the moon so I'm excited to see how it looks in MSFS with your mod!
Cheers!

No worries! I was keen to find out whether they ended up fixing it. There's still the issue of aerial tiles popping, but that's happening in many places around the world. Enjoy your trip to Lake Eyre, however please keep in mind that the textures for it, because of the large size, are not particularly well blended. Unfortunately one of the drawbacks of this mod.

Will you please make all your airstrips star airstrips so that they can easily be found and distinguished on the MSFS World Map?
Thank you.

Sure hope that you will find some time to update the Salt lake fix to be compatible with Sim update 11 mate..This is some of your finest work!

Hey mate, I'm away from my sim computer for another couple of weeks, but this fix should still work without with SU11, even without re-compiling it for SU11, so please just try it as it is. I will test and update any of my add-ons that don't work with SU11 as soon as I get back.

You put Asobo to shame. The main thing going for MSFS is the scenery and world rendering, and even this is now being done by third parties. Sad.

Well done, as you say Asobo should have got it done.
