Welcome to Landau-Ebenberg airfield in Landau in der Pfalz!
In the sim this well known glider airfield is also called Insheim and has the fictional ICAO-Code EDJT. Insheim borders on Landau airfield but the latter is part of Landau itself.
Ebenberg can be literally translated to flat mountain. However it is none of that. It's not situated on a mountain (rather nearby the Palatinate Forest mountains) and it is anything but flat. Most of the western part of the airfield is more or less a deep pit with very rough terrain. In real life it is regarded not-landable however it is great fun doing so in the sim. This leaves the pilot with 600 m of grass runway in the east to take off or perform a glider tow. West of the pit there is another 150 m of grass which is called 'stamp' by the Landau pilots. It's more of an emergency spot for a glider landing if you arrive too high and can't make a stop before the pit if coming from the east.
The airfield is frequently used for glider competitions. The most common start method is a winch tow which uses the full 1,255 m length of the field. The eastern grass runway is split into three runways which can be used by aircraft side by side if necessary.
In this sim version I did the following work:
- Adding all buildings. I did not handcraft any of them. I chose stuff from libraries that do reality a little justice but size and colour are not always correct.
- Terraforming to add the pit.
- Added static and animated gliders, cars, people and further detail.
- Did a good deal of work on the satellite picture to cover up artifacts.
Operating in the sim
At first I added only one runway. However this led to a starting point on 'the stamp' in the west which in reality is used for winch launches to the east but it doesn't make sense for an aerotow or GA-aircraft takeoffs. That's why I added runway 10L - 28 R. You can use it for operating on the 600 m of grass.
However taking off or landing in the pit is fun in the sim. I also tested aircraft tows which work fine with a little care. In the heavy DG1001e it is however recommended not to take any ballast.
Known issue
For whatever reason the default LS8 is not using the full 1,255 m of runway in a winch launch but is always about 300 m further 'inside' the field. You can still take off fine but you will get to less altitude. I haven't found a way to do anything about it and found no help online. So if anyone knows more about the issue I appreciate your support via a PM.
I tested the winch launches with the default DG1001e as well as the freeware Madolo LS4 and the Got Friends Discus 2c. They all work fine in any direction from the assigned starting points.
Winter Edition
Airfields full of glider activities look weird during winter. Not much is going on except for an occasional single engined flight. This alternative version removes all static gliders and summer activities and adds a few people in proper winter clothing. Nobody's gotta freeze.
Installation
Unzip the file into your community folder. You should have all World Updates and the UK2000 library installed (free from the marketplace). Other than that, install the dependencies as listed below.
